After we received our photos we ordered a couple of sample thank you cards. Originally I had really wanted an accordion style card so we could share more photos, but they weren’t quite what we were expecting. I didn’t realize the base size was 3.5×5 (I was thinking it would be 4×6) and the quality of the print wasn’t as good as we were expecting. It reminded us of those digital disposable cameras, which had a grainy appearance and the color was a little off (for example, a brilliant blue sky came out looking pale blue-grey).

So we decided to go with a 5×7 fold thank you card, created in iPhoto. We were really pleased with the quality of the print and the paper as well as the larger size. I placed the full order yesterday. As soon as they arrive we are going to get moving on writing and sending them! I’m not posting a photo of the card we did choose, so if you’re reading this before we send them it won’t ruin the surprise.

It took a long time to finalize our wedding album, but we love it! Thank you to Danielle for being so patient with us. We spent many months deciding from the more than 600 photos and then arranging them perfectly in the layouts. We picked up our album a few weeks back from Danielle’s new studio, which was really well done. It even had a big canvas print of us on the wall! Our album also came with two back up DVDs of all our photos as well as a parent album. Our album is 8×20 inches, and becomes 16×20 when opened, instead of the traditional 10×10 or 12×12. It’s really nice to have the proportions of a large print inside. The cover is also a print with a thick layer of acrylic on top of it. It’s printed on silver paper and looks amazing. Here are a couple of photos, though I’m not sure if they do it justice:

We spent our first wedding anniversary at the Inn at Quogue, the same place where we stayed when we got married. We had a very peaceful and fun weekend, but missed having all our family and friend with us!

We decided to spend our first wedding anniversary in the same place we got married. We drove out east the day before our anniversary and rented a room at the Inn at Quogue then went down to the beach during the “magic hour” and into sunset. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon, but not as perfect as our wedding day. By the time we were walking back to the car, we were both sniffling a little from the cool, steady ocean breeze. Once the sun went down, the day lost it’s warmth. It wasn’t as good as the gorgeous, warm night a year ago and how everyone was enjoying watching and listening to the ocean from under the tent at Atlantica. Once again, we were amazed at how lucky we were for our wedding! We then drove down to Main Street in Westhampton Beach to get some drinks, seeing it at night for the first time. All the little shops and the theater especially looked cute with the lights twinkling in the night. We spent the rest of the evening hanging out in our room. We were the only people staying at the Inn, so we had the whole place to ourselves. We watched a Discovery Channel series about the South Pacific. The parts about Hawaii especially got us thinking of our honeymoon, which is a great memory.

Today is our actual anniversary, Sept. 21st! We slept in and the went back to Westhampton Beach for a late breakfast and walked Main Street, mostly window shopping. When we came back to the Inn, we switched to the bridal suite, which is the same room we had for our wedding night, and then borrowed the bikes they have for guests. They are the upright kind of bikes that I’ve always admired, but never tried to ride. We loved them! They were much more comfortable for your back and simpler since there are no gears and wires to mess with for brakes (you just peddle backward to brake). We rode all around Quogue and to the beach again, where it was a beautiful day, just like our wedding day – perfect low 70s, a sunny blue sky, and very little breeze. After our bike ride we went to dinner at the Restaurant at the Inn. (Sorry Queens folks, it’s no longer called the “Q”). :(

We really enjoyed the peacefulness of the day, but at the same time we were thinking about how much fun we had with all our family and friends out here with us a year ago. Throughout the day, I would look at my watch and think of what we were doing. Like, “At this time, you (talking to Peter) just arrived to the church; think how nervous you were!” And, “At this time the cocktail hour just ended and we were lining up to be introduced to everyone.” As a matter of fact, as I’m writing this, at this time last year, we were cutting the wedding cake! So far we’ve had a really great anniversary. We have a bottle of champagne and a log for the fireplace waiting for us now, so good night!

We weren’t able to get everything we had originally wanted, but we’re very excited about what we did get. Tonight I used our new stand mixer to make pizza dough, which we cooked on the stone Brian & Michelle got for us. We used fresh basil and it was delicious! Check out the mixer in action:

Yesterday we met with our photographer to make the photo choices and review the cover materials and size options for our wedding photo album. We have over 600 proofs and had narrowed the options down to about 200 before we met with Danielle. She was so nice to spend all morning with us reviewing photos and helping us with the editing process. We narrowed it down to 130 by the end of our meeting.

Next we have to decide if we want to have a 10×10, 12×12 or 8×20 album and which cover material to use. I am torn between a lighter color suede album to go with the airy, beach feel or a classic black which will make the image stand out more. Peter seemed pretty undecided on that matter. We also might be able to get a cover that is acrylic with a full photo showing from underneath it, which could be modern and different. I’m thinking about the 8×20 album, which is a long rectangle, but once you open it, it becomes 16×20 which is a standard size for a very enlarged photo. That would be really neat to have all that space inside the album for large prints.

Now we’re waiting to hear back from Danielle about some options for combining cover materials and to see a photo of what the 8×20 album looks like (it’s a newer option, so we didn’t get to see a sample). Pete and I were both really happy after we met with Danielle that we are on our way to having a completed album. We felt really great about the photo choices we made and are really excited to move forward with this.

On Dec 22 at about 11:30 pm we were in front of the Christmas tree at Rockafeller. At this time a year ago, we were driving to my parents and calling everyone along the way to tell them the exciting news. It’s a little crazy to think back to how we felt then compared to everything that has happened in the last year. A lot of people asked right away when we would get married and who was in the bridal party etc. We felt overwhelmed and said we didn’t want to start planning an actual wedding. By New Year’s Eve, we had decided to get married in 2008 rather than waiting for a year and a half for warm weather to return. When we talked to some newlyweds about getting married within the year, they said we had better start now now now! And the whirlwind began… I am pretty proud of the wedding we planned, and it’s even more amazing when I realize we did it in only 9 months.

Well, two months after our return I’m finally writing about it. I hope it will be easier now to summarize everything. If I had tried to write about it all as soon as we got back, you would be reading for hours! Our trip to Hawai’i included three islands: O’ahu, Kawai’i and Maui. O’ahu is where the capital city Honolulu is and the busy Waikiki Beach; Kawai’i is the less developed, lush, natural beauty; and Maui is the tourists heaven with lots of activities and the 10,000+ ft volcano top of Haleakala looking down over everything.

O’ahu

We first flew in to Honolulu and spent a night in a fancy high rise hotel in downtown Waikiki Beach. We had delicious blackened mahi and walked around Waikiki – like 5th Avenue Manhattan only clean and with a beach a block away. We got up very early the next day and spent the morning at the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. It’s hard to know what to say about it, but it was a very powerful experience. That night we watched the sun set over the ocean and looked out at the city from our balcony.

Kaua’i

The next day we flew to Kauai’i, where we stayed for almost a week. Kauai’i is known for its wild roosters, which we saw even at the airport. At first, it wasn’t entirely obvious what we should do. Kaua’i has a quiet, small town feel with only one main road on the island and it only goes around about half of the island. The other half of the island is the Napali Coast, which is rain forest and only accessible by foot or helicopter – it’s also where the opening scenes of Jurassic Park were filmed. We stayed in a little town called Kapa’a, right in the middle of the accessible part of the island. During our week in Kaua’i, we drove up north and saw dry and wet caves that disappear into the distance as well as a series of one lane bridges, that exemplify the island. People are courteous to each other and take it slowly. We made it to the end of the road to the famous Ke’e Beach. It was very rainy the day we went, so we didn’t get to take advantage of it. Another day, we drove to the south end of the island and then into the mountains. We saw Waimea Canyon, nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” and then hiked down to the Napali Coast. When we looked out in the distance from the trail, it was hard to tell where the ocean ended and the sky began. It was even more breathtaking when we got to the end of the trail, where there were 2,500 foot cliffs to the ocean below. We barely made it back to the car because the sun set while we were still hiking back. When the sun sets in Hawai’i, you have about 10 minutes until the sky is black! As we started our drive down from the mountain, we pulled over and watched the stars. It was incredible! I’ve never seen the sky like I did there. We saw shooting stars and tiny distant stars filled the sky like dust. Another day in Kaua’i, we saw an 80 foot waterfall and the village of Kamokila. The village is recreated to show how ancient Hawaiians lived. Though Ke’e may be the most famous beach on Kaua’i, I think our favorite was the Lydgate State Park Beach. It was much sunnier and the water was a beautiful almost clear blue-green. On our last night we went for Lomi Lomi massages, which were in a mountain-side house in a room where one whole wall had doors that opened on to the lanai. We could hear the sounds of nature (even some distant roosters) as we were massaged. At the end of our time in Kaua’i we were totally relaxed, and so happy that we still had a whole week left to go in Maui.

Maui

Quite the opposite of Kaua’i, as soon as we got to Maui we were overloaded with possibilities. During our week, we ended up going to a luau, watching the sun rise above the clouds from over 10,000 feet, taking a tour of a working Hawaiian plantation, snorkeling with sea turtles, watching a pod of spinner dolphins, zip lining in the mountains, hiking in the rain forest, swimming in a waterfall, visiting artists’ studios, going to a stage performance and meeting the cast, and of course hanging out at the beach. We booked our luau as early as possible, because we were really excited about it. We decided on the Feast at Lele. The food and drinks were delicious and the show was great. We even had table-side service. Another fun trip was a hike in the rain forest, which the locals nickname the trail “Rusty Bridges.” There were two swing bridges that we had to cross and they were quite scary! It was very humid in the rain forest, so when we got to the waterfall at the end we jumped right in! The water was coming down from the top of the mountain so it was freezing, but it felt wonderful and made hiking back to the car much more bearable. One of the things we knew about ahead of time and were really looking forward to was going to the top of Haleakala to watch the sun rise above the clouds. It was stressful (getting there), but incredible once we made it. We had to leave at about 3 am and we got bad internet directions which sent us to a dead end, to a road that only ATVs can go on. We had to drive back down the mountain and eventually found the right road. We barely made it, but the photos I got there were probably the best of the whole trip. I also really loved snorkeling with the sea turtles. It was so cool to see them up close. One came up for a breath of air only a couple of feet in front of us. We also saw a show called Ulalena – which has been compared to Cirque du Soleil. It is the story of how the Hawaiian people came to be. It has great music, dancing and acrobatics. Another place that we really enjoyed was the town of Lahaina, which is known for it’s art studios. It also has a lot of little shops along the water and a banyan tree which was planted in 1875 and is now more than an acre in size. The banyan tree grows very long branches, and when they get to heavy, the branches drop roots and keep growing. It’s hard to explain but it’s one huge tree that looks like a forest all on it’s own. We also really enjoyed the beach in the town we stayed in called Ka’anapali. It was nice because the sand was a lot longer than other beaches.Where we stayed (a studio apartment) if you sat on the bed, the short balcony blocked the view of the sand completely. It felt almost like we were directly over the ocean in our room!

When the last week was finally over it was really hard to pack up and come home. We met some other couples in our hotel that were also on their honeymoon. One of them decided to move to Hawai’i they loved it so much. If it wasn’t so far from our family and friends I would totally have been joining them. Hawai’i is heaven on earth!

2:35 San Francisco time… We’re sitting in the airport waiting for our flight to Hawaii to start boarding! We spent the last 3 1/2 days loving San Francisco. This was the first time either of us has ever been to California, so it was really nice to experience everything together for the first time. On our arrival, we realized the hotel we picked was really a motel and the front desk clerk was just horrible. He actually screamed at us. Thank goodness we booked through hotels.com. We called them up and they sorted everything out for us and found us the perfect place to stay. We ended up at “The Hotel California;” just a few blocks from Union Square. The hotel is in an older building but it is well maintained, with high ceilings, beautiful molding, bold paint colors, amazing artwork and quotes painted right on the walls. On arrival, the front desk offers guests a shot of tequila! They also provided complimentary wine, fruit, cheese and crackers in the afternoons. Our room was also wonderful! We had rich yellow walls, plantation shutters, real hardwood floors, and the softest, plushest bed. The decor was also a lovely blend of masculine and feminine. The bedspread had an antique look pattern but there was dark wood furniture and a streamlined leather chair and ottoman. Pete and I agreed it was one of the coziest rooms we have ever stayed in.

On our first evening in San Francisco, we walked down the street to a Mexican restaurant called Colibri. We were expecting similar Mexican food to what we are used to in New York, but this was quite different. Instead of chips and salsa to begin, they served warm corn tortillas with three dipping sauces. One was pineapple and mango, another jalepeno based and the last was chili based. The food was very good, but the best was the dessert. They serve “Churro con Dulce de Leche.” We loved the dessert so much we came back for lunch before heading to the airport today. After dinner, we walked around Union Square and Market Street (the shopping district). We also stopped to watch the cable car turn around, and were intrigued when we realized that the cars were turned around by man power! We called it an early night since we were not adjusted to the time difference.

On our second day, we started at 6 am and had a filling breakfast at the hotel. We then headed out for a long day of sight seeing. First we took the bus to Golden Gate Park, where we made several stops. First up was the Conservatory of Flowers, which was having a special exhibit of live butterflies. We also learned about some interesting plants, and there was an entire room of orchids of all sizes. Next we went to the de Young museum & Academy of Sciences, which unfortunately was not having its grand opening until the day after we were leaving. We had lunch at the de Young cafe and then headed out to the Japanese Tea Garden. Inside we found many peaceful and zen-like landscapes which were very relaxing to walk through. Finally, we went to the Rose Garden, which was wonderful. I couldn’t help but take tons of photos of all the beautiful colored roses! Our last stop for the day was the Golden Gate Bridge. We walked around and took in the views of the bridge, city, bay, and we both got our first view of the Pacific Ocean. We loved the sight of the blue water and white crashing waves on the black rocks.

On our last full day, we tried to fit in all the sites we hadn’t yet seen. First we walked over to See’s Candies, where we bought some chocolate to have after lunch. Then we took the cable car from Market Street up to Lombard Street, which is nicknamed the “steepest, crookedest street in San Francisco.” Luckily for us the cable car stopped at the top of the street, so we walked down instead of up. I know Laura will tease us for not attempting to walk up it, but it was fun anyway! Next we walked to the Fisherman’s Wharf, and walked from Pier 49 to Pier 33. Along the way we saw the “bush man;” a guy who hides behind a fake bush and jumps out and scares tourists. We were across the street, laughing and taking pictures. For lunch, we stopped at a chili & chowder food stand, and ate some very delicious clam chowder, while sitting outside in the grass. When we got down to Pier 33 it was time for our ferry to Alcatraz to leave. We spent a couple of hours walking around the island and taking the audio tour of the closed down prison. The part that surprised me the most was that the cells were only 5 ft x 9 ft x 7 ft. I knew they would be small, but I had no idea they would be that small. After Alcatraz, we walked back down the Warf to Pier 39, where there is an outdoor mall with shops of all kinds, from little souvenirs to expensive pearl jewelry. Also at Pier 39 is the spot where all the seals gather. There must have been at least 100 seals when we went. We saw some funny moments of them interacting with each other and there was even one who was interacting with the people. I loved the chowder so much at lunch I decided to have it again for dinner while we were at the pier, and Peter had a shrimp & crab po’ boy. As we continued walking, we saw a street artist who was making posters from spray paint, and was making some amazing optical illusions by smearing, spattering and layering the colors. As we continued walking back the way we came, we were on the opposite side of the street. We were talking and laughing when all of a sudden we both jumped and screamed. The bush man got us! We never expected it, even though we had seen him earlier in the day! Lastly, we stopped at Ghirardeli Square to check out the chocolate lover’s heaven before calling it a night.

On our last day in San Francisco (today), we decided to relax before our flight out, and now we can’t wait to see what Hawaii has to offer!

Peter this will give away a bit of what my dress looks like and I know you don’t want to know, so don’t read on!

Last night I went for another fitting for my dress. I had asked my seamstress to make me sleeves based on a design in photo because I don’t feel comfortable in a strapless dress. The dress I bought came as a strapless because it seems to be the most popular style right now. I love everything else about my dress and figured it wouldn’t be too hard to add some support on top! So the seamstress did a great job on the sleeves and made exactly what I asked her for, but it didn’t look right on my body. At first I was a little freaked out. Only 11 days until the wedding and I don’t like my dress!

We played around with some fabric and came up with a new plan and I think it’s going to look great. It’s going to be a halter top, which shows my back and shoulders and is much more flattering on me. The only thing was, we needed some way to make the halter blend in with the dress since the top of it is straight across. We decided to repeat the ribbon accent from the bodice across where the seam will be. The only problem was there wasn’t enough ribbon left in the dress, so I had to go hunting around Manhattan today for the perfect match. It’s amazing how many fabric and notions stores there are in the fashion district. After about an hour and a half of walking around, I finally found the perfect silk satin ribbon at this beautiful store called Tinsel. I was so relieved when I found it!

I am also kind of laughing at myself. The things we do in the name of weddings… I have spent a long time doing some things that seem silly, but in the end I’m happy to have the result be just what I want. Another example of this was also with ribbon… when the invitations were reprinted and still weren’t right. The text was too close together and was covered up by the ribbon. So Pete and I found a narrower version and I sat for hours taking ribbon off of the invitations and putting the new one on. Now that I look at the invitations with the new ribbon though, I love them. I hope the same thing happens with my dress!

Last night we had our bachelor and bachelorette parties. I won’t comment too much on Pete’s party (I’ll leave that to him) but I’ll tell you a bit about both. Stacy and Laura came up to NY last night and we spent the day hanging around Manhattan and shopping for clothes and jewelry for the evening. Laura got me a hot pink dress and I found a mini tiara which I thought was a cute joke since I decided not to wear one for the wedding. I also found some white tulle in the apartment and made a mini veil to go along with it, plus a bachelorette sash Pete’s mom got for me. When we were walking around later in the night it was fun to have people notice me and say congratulations etc.

At dinner time, the boys went to a steak house called Angelo & Maxie’s, which (from what I gather) was a great time. The girls went to Burrito Loco (my favorite Mexican restaurant). After dinner the girls decided I had to try and have a “slippery nipple” shot (which you can’t use your hands to drink). I tried…but failed. I ended up with whipped cream in my nose!

After dinner we went to a couple of bars, including Coyote Ugly where I had to dance on the bar! The boys did their own version of a night on the town, and then we all met up at Cheap Shots, which is one of my favorite dive bars. They have black lights, writing on every single surface of the bar, walls, tables, etc and air hockey! We actually stayed out until the lights came on. Pete and I both expected we would call it a night much sooner, but we didn’t because we had a lot of fun. Here’s a snapshot of those that were still standing at the end of the night:

Well, since most of you who read the blog were there, you already know…but I gotta write about it anyway. Sunday was my bridal shower, and it was the best party ever. I had so much fun and every detail was perfect! The black, white and hot pink decor was so modern and pretty.

My sister and mom were here on Saturday, but said Laura had to get back because of some problems at work, so they left Sunday morning. I didn’t even realize that my sister sneaked into my closet and took my dress and shoes to wear at the shower! The last time I went to have my hair colored I was complaining to my hairdresser about not knowing what to do with my hair for the wedding. So he called me last week and said he had an idea and wondered if I would come in on Sunday morning to try it. How clever!

Thanks to everyone who came and for all the wonderful gifts! I have to go clean up and organize everything and start writing some thank you cards. Here is one teaser photo, and I will post the rest in the photo albums soon:

Isn’t that cool?! Here’s a sneak peak at one of the DIY projects:

We are getting to the point now where we have a ton of little details to work out and not much time left. I still feel relatively panic free, but I am ready to be done soon so I can go into the wedding with as little stress as possible. There have been a couple of times that I have thrown parties where I planned more than I could accomplish and I didn’t enjoy myself. For example, one Christmas I spent 8 hours cooking (all recipes I had never made before-which is extra stressful) and then I greeted the guests still in my apron while finishing up cooking. I didn’t really enjoy that party at all. I definitely don’t want our wedding to be like that, so I am trying to get as much done now as possible. This also makes it harder to write a cute little blog entry about my one activity of the day, since I’m all over the place trying to finalize things.

Today I worked more on figuring out my hair, makeup and jewelry. I met with another stylist who is a family friend (of Pete’s family) and I hope she will be my savior after three trials of “just okay.” I want to love my hair. One of the women I talked to today said that if I don’t like my hair that’s the first thing I’m going to think of whenever I look at my wedding photos (and my hair will be in them all). I think she is right. Also today I made progress on the programs, menus and escort cards/table numbers, by picking out papers and deciding to keep it simple and use the table number frames provided by Atlantica rather than buying some cutesy holder and then having one more thing to remember to bring out there. Then I came home and wrapped the bridal party gifts, which means that project is complete. Oh also, earlier today I worked more on finalizing the music selections for the ceremony and making sure we’re all set with the trolley for transportation from the inn to the reception & back. Whew. Enough for one day?

Who knew there would be so many to make. I sure didn’t. Now I know better. You would think my guy friend’s would have let me know it would be this way. Maybe they didn’t because it’s some kind rite of passage that guys have to go through. You don’t “spoil the surprise” for your pals. You let them find out for themselves. Maybe married guys do go try and warn their single friends but to no avail. Maybe a happy go-lucky bachelor can not even begin to comprehend the amount of work and decision making that goes into a wedding. Could it be an example of ignorance being bliss. Perhaps it is. I will tell you something; I was ignorant prior to this. I have learned things that I never knew before. Unfortunately, at this moment, I can not recall exactly what it is that I did learn. But, whenever some new aspect of wedding planning arose that I no idea ever existed, I do remember thinking to myself, “Wow, I just learned something”.

I really think that decision making can be very overwhelming for grooms. Several guys have said “Let her do all the work.” That’s a great idea in theory but I don’t think it works in practice. Sarah does most of the work by far, but there are times she asks for my input. I tend to procrastinate when Sarah asks me what I think. Do you think that is the reason my blog entries have been few and far between.

I’m beginning to open up to the idea that there is perhaps a middle-ground. Maybe I don’t actually have to make the decisions. Maybe Sarah knows the answers to a lot of the things she asks me and just wants a little input. If I make a little effort to understand what the facts of the situation are then I can briefly give a thought or two and leave the decision to her. Maybe it’s not hard as I perceive it to be.

Billy, this is in response to your question. Why do I have so few blog entries? Why? Why, Why? It’s simple. It’s because I’m lazy. Let’s see if I change that. What to write about. Let’s see. I found a ring a while ago. I’m excited about it. I thought it was going to be hard to find one. Then one day I stumbled into a jewelry store and I found it. It is made of titanium and it feels light. It fits nicely but I’m worried it may be the tiniest bit too big. I’m not sure though. Some people have said it’s dangerous in case my hand gets hurt. That freaked me out a bit. But I think that might not be the case based on other word of mouth and the little bit of research I did. Some people tried to dissuade me by saying they are too light and after a while you want a “real” ring or one that weighs more. I don’t think I care. I’ve never worn jewelry before, so I don’t think I will mind. If anything, it will take a little longer to get used to actually having something there as opposed to not having something substantial enough. We’ll see.

Today we went back to the shop my engagement ring came from and looked at wedding bands again. I pretty much knew what I wanted because we had gone in to browse once before. The first ring I tried on today was perfect. It was even my size. I decided to go with the channel set because it adds a little more sparkle to the overall look, and it is simple and sleek which is what I am usually drawn to. Here’s a similar ring:

Next Pete decided to look at some more rings because he is still not 100% sure. He compared yellow gold, white gold, titanium and tungsten. I did my best not to give an opinion because I think Pete will be happier if he comes to his own conclusion. He says he is going back and forth between the modern look of the titanium/tungsten and the classic look of yellow gold or white gold. I think he’s unsure about the titanium/tungsten because we are unfamiliar with the metals. Here’s what we learned about each:

Titanium: Titanium is the dark “gunmetal” color, very lightweight, and very hard. We had heard that titanium can’t be cut, but John (the guy we work with at the shop) said that was only true when they first came out. Titanium can now be cut. Titanium will scratch over time and is hard to condition or repair because it is so hard. Price range is $100s.

Tungsten: Tungsten is also the dark “gunmetal” color, and very hard. However it is also very heavy. Tungsten can’t be cut, so all rings made from tungsten have a “breakout” point (like a crumple zone in a car) where it is purposefully made weaker. The problem with this is that if you drop your ring on a very hard surface, it could crack and you will have to replace it. Tungsten will not scratch over time and requires no upkeep. Price range $300-400s.

My mom came to visit this week and ended up helping me get it together and put it in perspective. I actually got sick from stress, so she stayed for a couple extra days to help me get things done. I’ve had a to do list in my head for months, and getting it all out on paper was a long process, but well worth it. Once it was written down we could start checking things off and I didn’t have the stress of remembering so much.

We also managed to call about a dozen limo companies, and finally book one. We decided to go with a party bus and a Rolls Royce. I first noticed the Rolls for the bride at Lisa’s wedding, and I loved the “here comes the bride” horn. I can’t wait to be the one it’s sounding for! :)

We scheduled a second appointment with the florist. We decided to simplify the flowers to mostly roses. All the different types of flowers we had originally picked out just became to busy and we were over thinking how we could make them into something we liked. Since I love the type of roses that we picked out for the bouquets (vendela roses), we figured why not just stick with what I love? Here’s our new inspiration photo:

Another thing we did was schedule a hair and makeup trial for me. I’ve been holding off on this, so I’m glad to have it set up. I am also interested now in understanding more about airbrush makeup. I was under the impression that it was better and didn’t realize there could be any drawbacks. The woman I scheduled the trial with was telling me that she feels airbrush is not usually the best option. I guess we’ll talk more about it during the appointment. Here’s my inspiration photo for my hair:

We spent the entire day in the Hamptons and had a blast. First we went to Atlantica where we got to see the tent (for the cocktail hour) for the first time. Last time we were there it was April and still too cold to put it up. We saw photos and liked it, but in person it was amazing. We sat out on the deck listening to the ocean, feeling the breeze and watching the fabric of the tent billowing around us. Even though it was a hot day, it was very comfortable under the tent.

While we were at Atlantica, we finalized the menu and wedding cake. Atantica has three suggested menus to choose from, at three different price points. I had asked our coordinator Carlos if we could come up with a custom menu of everything we wanted and then figure out the price. Not only were they fine with it, but Carlos told us today that the owner/chef loved our menu and is considering making it be one of the set menus they offer. We were so excited that they gave our taste such a compliment. Now that it’s done all I can say to you is be prepared to stuff yourself silly and then dance it off!

Next we went to Quogue and checked out the Inn. Everything was much greener than the last time we were here, and they have also been painting and fixing up so it looks great. We walked around town in Quogue and stopped for lunch at the country market. We split the “Emily’s Favorite” sandwich (basil, tomato, fresh mozzarella and pesto) along with some exotic veggie chips and we went across the street and sat in the park to eat. Quogue is so quaint to walk around.

After lunch, we went to the church and met with Father Mirro. We talked about what we learned in pre cana, then we discussed the ceremony and scheduled our rehearsal. Father had some sage advice for us as well.

While we waited for mass, we walked around downtown Main Street in Westhampton. Anything you could want can be found in Westhampton, even if all you want is a stroll down a tree-lined street with local shop windows to peek in at. We checked out some book shops, a pub, a sushi place, a theater, several cafes, local furniture shops, a candy shop and yes, Pete even found a comic book shop!

After mass, we went to Docker’s on the Bay, had a bite to eat, listened to some live music, and watched the sun set. I know some—who am I kidding—most people associate the Hamptons with the socialite/Manhattanite playground for the summer, but for me, Westhampton will forever be a romantic, spiritual, nature getaway. I never would have guessed that we would marry in the Hamptons but I couldn’t imagine having a better wedding anywhere else. Here’s a snapshot of us at Docker’s:

After dancing, we met up with Jonathan for dinner and a music discussion. We picked out many songs and came up with a good description of the feeling we are going for so we can tell the DJ what we want. Basically we want to have funky dance music that everyone can sing along to, but not songs that are played so much you’re tired of hearing them. Now that we have a lot of the songs planned, I am really starting to picture the party coming to life.

We also discussed how to keep the traditional wedding elements we want, but at the same time having a fun dance party that can flow naturally without too much interruption. The main way we are trying to acheive this is to have the dinner courses served during a set time, rather than stretching it out and getting up and down for dancing and then the next bit of food. We’re also going to try and group together some of the other wedding bits so they don’t interrupt the dancing multiple times. Sounds fun, right?

Today was an amazing day, but I almost forgot, I have to write about yesterday first! Yesterday Pete decided he didn’t feel up to dancing at our lesson. At first I felt a little weird, but I decided to go ahead and spend the hour dancing with our instructor. It was a really different experience. Rather than me and Pete both working on learning something one step at a time, then slowly putting it together and then adding the music, we were just dancing away and I learned new steps at full speed. We played about 6 different songs too. At the end I was really glad I decided to dance without Pete because it was exciting to learn so many new steps in one lesson. I learned more swing steps, more side steps, another type of side step and maybe some other things I can’t even remember right now. Sometimes it’s hard to describe what I learned because my brain doesn’t always quite understand the step, but if I don’t think about it too much, my muscles remember. The most interesting idea I learned today is that with swing dancing, as long as you can do two steps and a rock step you will always come out even no matter what crazy turns your partner is doing or making you do.

So, I want to tell you about our e-photo session, but I can’t say too much. While there are a few who have seen a sneak peak, they meant to be unveiled at the wedding. For those of you who don’t know what an e-photo session is, it is a complementary photo shoot given by your wedding photographer. The purpose is to get you feeling comfortable in front of the camera. And if you really like the pictures, you can purchase prints, etc. Let’s just say that out photographer and I were on the same page before we even opened our mouths. I had the perfect location in mind and she was in full agreement. When the day came for us to shoot it was very hot. I did have fun taking the photos but I was very exhausted. I guess because that weekend was so busy I felt really tired. By the time I saw the photos I had ambivalent feelings. But like a fine bottle of wine aging over time or a nice concrete slab undergoing chemical reactions in a process known as curing, my appreciation for these photographs solidified. Now I am bursting at the seams with excitement. All I can say is that they have managed to amalgamate the images of my lovely fiancée and myself with a visual style I really love. I’d say more but I’d probably reveal too much.

This weekend Pete and I had pre cana at the Brooklyn Diocese. Friday night there was a liturgy that was very similar to what our wedding will be like (minus the vows, ring exchange etc). The priest gave a really great homily, that Pete and I both enjoyed. Because we were at an interfaith pre cana, he said we are all there for a reason; somehow our journey has led up to the point that we decided to marry in the Catholic church, but we should not look at it as coincidence or chance. Those words made me feel very welcome and secure. Sometimes I find it really hard to paraphrase the words that led to feeling I walk away from church with, but I guess that’s the best I can do.

On Saturday, we were there all day with the best couple as our leader. They wouldn’t tell us how long they were married until the end of the day, but it turns out they will be married 48 years this August 20th. They were very inspiring because they still looked at each other like they were teenagers in love. They were also very honest with us though, and told many stories about all the hard times they had and the journey they took to get where they are now.

We spent most of the day separating to write down our thoughts and then coming back together to discuss them. The class covered many important topics. We had already discussed all of them at least a little bit, but it was very good to go deeper. When we were answering the questions separately, we not only had to write our own thoughts, but we also had to guess what the other person was going to say. I found it harder than I expected, but most of the time I had a good understanding of Pete’s feelings. The funniest part was on the personality section. Pete and I both thought of ourself as the dreamer and the other as the realist!

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our pre cana and we hope to finish the exercises in the booklet on our own time.

Today we bought our airline tickets to Hawaii. I found a really good deal, and we figured we would get started with that and fill in the rest of the details as we go. We are also planning to stay in San Francisco for a few days. I started doing some more research and talking to a friend who just went to Hawaii a few weeks ago. It’s a little overwhelming how much there is to do, and how man different types of places there are to stay! I’m think it will be good to spend about 3-4 days in each place. We don’t want to move around so much that we wipe ourselves out, but we also want to see as much as we can. Who knows if we’ll ever have a chance to go to Hawaii again. I started researching hikes because I know Pete always enjoys hiking. I love how descriptive everything is. One in particular sounded great to me. It started out under fruit trees, traveled under a canopy and ended at a waterfall with a pool of water at the bottom that you can swim in. I can’t wait to get there!

On Monday morning, Pete and I met with our stationer to review our concerns with the invites. She agreed and so did the printer, so they are being reprinted and should be in by Monday. That gave me a week to get the envelopes addressed, order the postage, get the wax seal, and assemble everything so they are ready to have the invite inserted and sent out as soon as they come in.

On Monday afternoon, I went to the post office to confirm the amount for the postage, and then I ordered the stamps. I then went to order the wax seal, but suddenly I noticed something I hadn’t before. They cautioned that the wax seal may make the envelope too thick, which then means you have to pay extra postage. So now I’m not sure if we should order it since I already ordered the postage based on the invite without the seal.

Once I finished with the post office I went to buy a color laser printer, because I figured it would come in handy for the invites, menus, programs, escort cards, gift tags etc. I brought the invite in to the store, to consult with the sales people. I got a great printer, but not for the envelopes. I tried every possible setting for thick material and it just couldn’t pass through. Then I got in touch with the stationer, since she had told me it is done “all the time” with both laser and ink printers. It turns out she was mistaken, the printers use a straight path ink printer, since the lined envelopes can’t bend enough to go around the drum of a laser printer.

So then today I started researching straight path inkjets. Canon has several, but those particular models are only sold through their online store, which would mean I have to wait for them to ship or pay high expedited shipping charges. And to be honest, I didn’t want to risk spending all that money and then it still not working. So back to the store I went, armed with my new knowledge. I found another printer in the store that has rear access to the paper path, so you can manually feed it straight through. The salesperson (who was extremely knowledgeable) assured me I could configure the software that came with the printer to use the rear access.

Once I got home I couldn’t figure it out, so I got on the live chat support. The “technician” was practically illiterate, and had no idea how to help me so I asked for someone to call me. I had to call them, and I got assigned a “ticket” number with the information about my product and issue. I was told I would be transfered to a technician who could help with my particular problem. After being transfered, the ticket number seemed to have no bearing, because I had to give all the information again (only to find out I was transfered to the wrong department). After being transfered to the wrong place for the third time, I politely requested that the correct person call me instead of transferring me again. She refused. So I then asked if I could speak to her manager and SHE HUNG UP ON ME! I once had an HP scanner and I had the same horrendous experience with their customer support. NEVER AGAIN!

After that I decided “I give up.” Two days wasted is enough. I’m returning the printer and hiring a calligrapher. On the bright side, the calligrapher I decided to go with comes highly recommended and can have them done by Monday like I originally wanted!

Everything seems much better from where we stand tonight than it did yesterday walking to the bridal shop. Once we got there, Stacy got a different person who was much more willing to help. I think he sensed that we were really upset and we weren’t being caustic, so he was willing to help us out and get Stacy fitted. After that we went on a mission to set up the tuxedo rentals, but on the way we stumbled on the perfect wedding band for Peter! He was having a hard time deciding what material he wanted the band to be made from, but once he tried on titanium he was really impressed. He’s never worn jewelry before, so the lightweight feel of titanium appealed to him.

Next we made it to the tux store and it was Peter’s turn to stand up in front of the mirrors and get measured and fitted. We decided to go with MW Tux (Men’s Warehouse) because they have locations all over for the out of state people, and the tuxes can be dropped off at any location. Very convenient.

Today was a much better day than yesterday. At church this morning, there was a flower arrangement on the altar that was exactly what we wanted for ours. At the end of mass we sneaked a few photos so we can show the florist. Then it was my turn to get fitted! I had my second fitting with Stella today. The tacks were all fixed in the skirt, and she made me a sleeve (just one to make sure I liked it first!). We also worked on the placement of the boning in the front of the dress, to try and make it the most flattering. Every time I go back and see my dress I fall in love again. I feel like a total princess in it.

Then tonight ended with a date. Pete and I went to see WALLE. It was so cute, and a perfect way to end the weekend.

I guess it’s inevitable that I was going to have a meltdown somewhere in the process of wedding planning. It felt like everything was going wrong for the last few days. First we had the lackluster centerpeices on Thursday. Then Pete and I had a fight (also inevitable in wedding planning). Next, the invitations came in on Friday. I thought they were okay but not great at first, but after looking at them closer and showing them to Pete, I realized they were not okay. So now we have less than a month until we planned to get the RSVP’s back by, and no invitations to send. We finally reached the woman doing the invites late last night, and she promised to call by 9 am this morning. This morning 9 came and went, then 10, then 11 and no call. Finally at 11:30 when we were on our way into the city I realized she had emailed me instead of calling. Then Stacy arrived from Maryland for her bridesmaid dress fitting. As Pete and I were walking to the store Stacy called to say she was there, the seamstresses were all gone for the day (and wouldn’t be back until Monday) and she couldn’t come back to New York until a few weeks before the wedding. I couldn’t even stop myself from crying while walking down the street in Manhattan.

Tonight Pete and I went to look at the first mock up of our centerpiece design for the reception. We were a little disappointed with the amount of green and thought there was not enough white. The florist promised to make it more white and swap out the two types of greens at the bottom for eucalyptus since it’s a softer, paler green. She also said she will make it a little higher by having some of the calas at the top instead of the stock. And she said she would switch out the roses for the same kind that will be in my bouquet, I thought those were too yellow looking, whereas the bouquet is vendela roses – a white with a slight pink undertone. Hopefully once those changes are made we will love the design!

Today we put the finishing touch on the first dance – the dip at the end! After 9 lessons we are feeling really comfortable with dancing. Each time we learn a new step it seems to come easier than the one before it. Now that we have all the moves down, we have to keep practicing to get smoother and learn to stay on the music. I think about dancing all the time now. It’s so much fun! The only problem is there’s really not enough space to practice in our apartment. I got a nice bruise on my knee from the coffee table one night… Now that we finished all the steps for the first dance, we can we can move on to other songs and types of dance in our lessons. Then we can really bust out the moves at the wedding!!

I have a really cute terrycloth hoodie and pants that I plan to wear while getting hair and makeup done on our wedding day. I have seen a lot of people get theirs embroidered but I’m not sure if I want to or not, so I thought I would ask for opinions. Here are the options:

A. The Future Mrs. Milcetic or Soon To Be Mrs. Milcetic (example). This seems to be the most popular design but then it’s not as wearable after the wedding.

B. Mrs. Milcetic Est 09.21.08 (example). I think this idea is cute because then it can be worn after the wedding, and everyone will know we’re newlyweds if I wear it on our honeymoon.

C. No embriodery, not as cute for the wedding day but definitely can wear it in the future!

D. Some other option…you tell me!

After watching a marathon of Trista & Ryan on the Bachelorette a few weeks ago, I decided it wasn’t such a bad idea to have a second dress. My main dress is very formal and heavy and I may decide I want to be more comfortable at some point during the reception or for the after party or whatever. So I went out today to look, with the intention of getting one of those allover antique lace gowns. I tried on about 10 lace ones before I gave up on it. Number 1 lace is so not comfortable! It’s super heavy and not all that soft. Number 2 I found another dress that is a soft and comfortable crinkle chiffon fabric. It practically feels like I’m wearing nothing. It has very little train so it’s perfect for dancing or wearing out to an after party. It’s also a new design that was just in to the store, so no one else tried it on. Since the wedding is less than 3 months away and the one in the store fit perfectly, they let me take it instead of waiting for an order. I didn’t think of it until I had the dress on, but it felt very much like it would be at home on the beach. So I may also wear it for some of the beach photos.

After months of deliberating we finally ordered the invitations today! Originally, we were going to do a message in a bottle to go with the beach theme, but I was really struggling to make it elegant enough. I’ve heard that the invitations should be the first hint to the guests about the tone of the wedding. The message in a bottle invitations were really cute, but just didn’t fit the type of wedding we are having.

Once we decided not to go with the bottle, I started designing a traditional invitation set and a map insert. I purchased new fonts, created my own icon and even designed a monogram for us that we’re having made into a wax seal stamper. I had so much fun doing it that I am thinking about designing invitations and maps as a business.

We had three top choices for invitations and in the end we decided to go with a more elegant, classic looking invitation with a just touch of beach rather than a very themed invitation. I really love the one we picked and it’s more fitting with the wedding we are having. I can’t wait to see them. Keep an eye out in the mail around the end of July or beginning of August!

Here are the links to the runners up: the Tropical Hoku Invitation by Hana Hou and the Serene Seaside Invitation by Encore Studios.

The wedding favors came in today! Unlike the struggles I’ve been having with choosing invitations, this was an easy choice. At first I was thinking of champagne bottles, but after doing a little research, I realized they came with stickers that you had to paste on top of the existing label. Then we would also have to worry about when to order it so it’s fresh, and storing it etc. So when I was tipped off about a new seasonal item that I think everyone will enjoy, I jumped right on it. There were less than 400 left in stock from the manufacturer and they said they will not be making any more, so we snapped up enough for everyone to have one!

I can’t believe we only have four months to go. I have been slacking on typing my wedding planning updates for the last few weeks but I have been writing in a notebook, so hopefully I will add everything online soon. In the meantime, today I started really thinking about the honeymoon. I have been using The Knot’s Ultimate Wedding Planner (thanks to Stacy!) and I also get a monthly e-mail from theknot.com on the 21st of each month. Today’s e-mail said it’s time to start planning the honeymoon! Our top two ideas so far are Croatia and Hawaii. I started getting some ideas from my wedding chat board and Hawaii really sounds amazing. I think it would also be a great balance for us because Pete also loves the mountains and hiking, and we can do that in the same place as we can go snorkeling. I would also love to go to Croatia and see the place where Pete’s dad’s side of the family is from but the beach weather is past its prime by the end of September.

Hi. Today I had a pretty good day. It started off a little questionably though. By the end of it I was able to salvage the remainder of the day. We went to City Island for Mother’s Day dinner. We dined at a place called the Black Whale. It was great. In fact it has put me in such a good mood that it thought it best to write a bit about how things are going. One of the key things going on these days is wedding preparation. So far we have done really well with the planning. It had been a goal of mine to become more involved with the wedding planning once busy season was over. As I reflect on the month or so since the end of the season, I am pleased. We have started taking dancing lessons. We have already had three sessions. I’ll write more of that in a moment. We have gone to a tasting of both appetizers and entrées at our reception hall. We’ve met with a Catholic priest and found a church to marry in. We have visited an excellent videographer. I am really excited by the look and feel of their videos. We’ve visited a DJ and a florist. I was a bit worried that maybe we should get a band but I’ve never really liked bands at weddings. Sarah reminded me that we need to do what made us comfortable so I think I’ll stick top a DJ. Besides, I think our wedding will sound better with the original music and sound as opposed to a band’s rendition.
So, let me tell you about our dance lessons. We started taking them about three weeks ago. Our instructor’s name is Leslie. She has made it really fun to learn to dance. I have to say we picked up on it pretty well. We don’t practice much, though I would like to, but we manage to do well while having fun. I’ll admit I sometimes let the pressures of everyday life get to me. I sometimes come to lessons with the burden of these stressors weighing down on me, but by the end I feel great. I feel like it was so easy to get to steps down. When I look at video of people “slow dancing”, i.e. rocking back and forth, it looks very simplistic. I recommend everyone take a few lessons. It may be a bit pricey but I feel it is worth it. Oh before I forget, I’ll tell you what we have learned. We’ve learned the box step with a twirl and the promenade step. There you have it. Talk to you next time.

I have been doing a lot of research on videographers over the last couple of months. Like many other things, I was surprised and happy when we finally found the one that captured our attention and made the little flag go up, saying “This is the one!!”

My first idea was a to go with Michelle, from Layer Cake Films. She shoots with super 8mm film and edits in a music video style. Michelle’s motto is that the video should enhance your memories of your wedding day, rather than replacing your memories with what was captured on film (as happens with too-long videos). I still love her style, but ultimately didn’t chose her because Peter wanted to have the sound from the day, which can’t be done with super 8mm. Here’s my favorite sample of Michelle’s videography & editing: Lindsay & Nick.

We looked at many other video options including our DJ company, several recommendations from our photographer and many others that I found. Somehow I came across Silverfox. I can’t remember how I found them, but I’m so glad I did. We were totally impressed with them today. The manager was very friendly and their samples are really impressive. I think our favorite part was that the video titles make it feel like a real movie. Overall Pete and I both felt these videos really had the style we were looking for. Here’s some of my favorite sample videos of Silverfox’s: Roseann & Christian’s ceremony and Roseann & Christian’s photo session.

While we were there, I also noticed a headpiece that I liked. I got super excited because I have been looking at dozens of tiaras, headbands, combs etc and never found anything I remotely felt I could wear. I got even more excited when I realized that the band was made from a bracelet of real pearls and Swarovski crystals, which was fastened to a headband with clear wire. I think it so cool that it can be taken apart and worn after the wedding. Once I found that out, I knew I had to get it! Then I got to the register and found out it was half price. How exciting!

Today was the day I have been the most nervous about for a long time. During tax season, Pete didn’t have time to help with much of the wedding planning, so I did as much as I could on my own and tried not to bother him too much. One thing I really wanted us to decide together though, was the location of the ceremony. As the end of tax season grew nearer, I scheduled appointments with priests at nearby churches. I have visited a few on some of my previous trips to the Hamptons, but Pete had not seen the one church I loved more than any other. I was scared to get my hopes up until I knew for sure that Pete liked it and that we could have the wedding there on our date. I feel so relieved and excited now because Pete also loved the church and the priest was a great. We have reserved the church for our wedding date! It’s really really real now!!

I originally had the idea that I wanted to avoid using so many flowers because I found it sad how many of them get cut and then die so quickly. While I was at the florists though, it was very easy to change my mind, and get swept up in the idea of traditional over-the-top floral arrangements. They do seem much prettier and fancier than any of the DIY centerpieces I have seen. Now that I’m back home, I’m just as confused as ever. I think I need to talk to Pete about it and sit with the idea for a while and see how we feel.

After seeing tons of positive reviews for the DJ company I was considering, I decided to ask Pete to come meet with them. We went over everything again and Pete got to watch the sample videos. I really like Ray’s upbeat personality and I think he will do a great job as MC of our wedding reception. Pete thought more about the band vs. DJ question and we talked in the car on the way there. I think I would enjoy either and I like the interactive nature of a live band but Pete really prefers the original songs. So we decided to book Variety Music. That’s one more big piece of the puzzle taken care of!

Today Pete and I went to look at a necklace I was considering wearing on our wedding day. As we walked up to Tiffany I was a little nervous (I know, silly). I had never gone inside before and I had no idea what to expect. I was nervous that we would not fit in with people who buy their jewelry there or something. That was definitely not the case! The woman we talked to spent a long time with us and gave us a lot of great ideas. Even though we decided the necklace I had my eye on wouldn’t have enough presence for bridal jewelry, I walked out feeling great that the staff at Tiffany is so kind and helpful!

Last Thursday, after hitting endless dead ends with finding someone close by to do my alterations, I went back and forth with a manager at Kleinfeld trying to convince her to let me come back to the store. In the end I was told there are no exceptions. However, she did tell me that the women on the list they gave me are the very same women who do the alterations in the store; they do work from home on their days off. I told her my frustration with how far they all are from Astoria, so she told me which seamstress was the best, and I made an appointment with her for today.

When I got there, I told myself I would be cautious and not work with her unless I was 100% comfortable with leaving my dress with her. Well, Stella is amazing. It was so worth the long drive to get to her. She has been a seamstress at Kleinfeld for 26 years! I stayed with her over an hour and in that time she completely transformed my dress to the vision I had in my head, with just a few pieces of scrap fabric and some pins. She also showed me how it will look with the bustle, and it’s fabulous. I felt very comfortable with her personality and I know my dress is going to be amazing because of her.

I have been wondering how I make sure the gown is not wrinkled after traveling out to the Hamptons. I guess because I’ve never been a bridesmaid or helped plan a wedding, there are so many little things I don’t know about. Stella is going to be with us the day of the wedding and steam the dress in the morning and help me get in to it. She also helps the moms and bridesmaids, does the bustle so we don’t have to get stressed out about doing it right, etc etc. I feel so relieved today after meeting with her and so blessed that she will be there on the day. The only sad part is that now I don’t get to see my dress again until my next fitting in July!

When we first thought about registering, we didn’t think there was anything we needed, but then it dawned on me that most people I know have wedding china set that is a treasured part of many holidays and I thought, that’s a nice thing to register for. Pete agreed with me, so I looked around and found a set that I really loved and a couple of backup options in case Peter hated it! I also saw a lot of other items that I loved while I was there, so I crossed over from my anti-registry viewpoint.

This morning Pete and I got up bright and early and went to a registry “event.” The store was closed except for couples registering for their wedding. It was a really fun experience. When we arrived at the store, we were offered mimosas, a scanner and a checklist to start out. I thought it would go pretty quickly since I picked my favorite options ahead of time and Pete wouldn’t have to look at every single thing, but we ended up spending about 2 hours looking around, asking lots of questions and enjoying some delicious food. The shop had several stations set up to demonstrate the different cookware and kitchen electronics and the food was amazing. For example, who knew there was such a thing as an indoor grill? I would never have thought to pick it out just seeing it on the shelf…in fact I didn’t even notice it. But after seeing it in action and tasting the skewers it made, we couldn’t resist. It’s also kind of perfect for us since we have no outdoor space! Now we just have to sort through everything and make sure we chose the right quantities etc.

I had originally planned to make a treasure chest instead of having a money bag. I liked the idea of a treasure chest for the “treasure,” but Maria pointed out that it’s a little pirate-y, which is true. Now that I think about it in that context, it might have looked out of place among all the other decorations. We found a very nice box that we will use instead. We also looked at flowers. One that popped out to me the most, is apparently known as “money tree” but I still have no idea what to do about centerpieces. I can’t seem to get that perfect picture in my head. If I keep looking it will come eventually, right?

So I have a wedding gown that I could love, if only I could get the alterations I want done. Apparently, no bridal shop will alter a dress they didn’t also sell to you, and Kleinfeld (the bridal shop I bought it at) won’t alter my dress either, because I purchased it in a sample sale. Kleinfeld gave me some recomendations, but the only one that is within a reasonable distance for me is a woman who doesn’t speak English very well and won’t even give me a ballpark estimate of the time or cost of the alterations I want unless I cart the dress over for her to look at. I was so happy when I saved myself over $2000, but now I’m paying for it in headache. I have been scouring all the posts on liweddings.com and other sites to see what other ladies have done. Surely I can’t be the only person in this situation? There must be someone reputable to do the alterations? Any ideas?

Yesterday I went and met with one of the MCs from Variety (Ray). In addition to everything I learned at the show on Monday night, I found out about some other great options. They also have strings, a jazz trio, and lots of video options. I think I would really like strings for the ceremony. Between that and the Sinatra singer, I think I would feel like I have enough live music to make me happy, and then we could have a DJ for the rest. We also talked about the fact that Pete and I have 4 songs that are potential first dance songs, and Ray had some great suggestions for incorporating all of them throughout the night.

As far as the video, it’s interesting to know that they can have plasma TVs which show a picture slideshow and then photos and live video throughout the night. It would be nice for people who aren’t close enough to see the action, for example when everyone gathers around for the cake cutting. I’m not sure how I feel about the look of the large TVs at the reception though. Does anyone have opinions?

Tonight, Kristin and I went to a bridal expo in Uniondale. I didn’t set out with this intention, but it ended up being all about the music. First, Kristin had a fabulous idea. She is an amazing composer and musician and she came up the the idea of playing piano at the wedding! I’m so excited to get such a personal gift from Kristin.

At the expo, we saw a 9-piece band called Nightflight and sample performances by Variety Music (DJs and entertainers). I am totally impressed with Variety’s Frank Sinatra singer. He was so perfect! We are strongly considering booking him asap. I also really liked Harry’s MC style. The best part is if we do decide to go with Variety, I won a coupon at the expo. While they were performing they called some of our names to come up to the stage and we had to dance in front of everyone to get our prize!

Then the band performed, which was really fun. The male lead singer was amazing at imitating different singing voices. I’m having a hard time deciding if I would prefer a band or a DJ. Pete is leaning toward DJ. One of the songs that Nightflight performed tonight completely captured my attention. It is a great song to dance to and I think everyone knows it. It’s going to be perfect for the last song at the wedding! When I got home, I downloaded the last song on iTunes, and Pete and I danced to it in our bedroom!

After Laura was fitted for her dress, we rushed home and drove out to Atlantica for the hors d’oeuvres tasting – 52 hors d’oeuvres in all! We also got to try all the options for the stations, the champagne & wine and the cakes & fillings. The passed hors d’oeuvres were very unique and I found a few of them to be quite tasty, but they didn’t compare to the stations. The stations were so delicious! It’s going to be hard to narrow them down and there’s no way we will be able to eat it all at the wedding! My favorite station was the dumplings. There were three types of dumplings and each had a coordinating sauce. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but maybe it was the chicken dumpling with wasabi sauce. Everyone that was with us also seemed to really love the sushi & sashimi station. The pasta station was perfection as well. It’s going to be very hard to resist the shellfish display and ice sculpture too. We might just get it all!

I think it’s going to look amazing on her once we get the alterations done. I’m pretty excited about the dresses, and now we are half way done with the measurements!

The dresses we picked are by Jim Hjelm. They come in a fabric called “satin faced taffeta” which I am in love with and they are a soft oceany blue-green (they call the color lagoon) and there is a taupe accent fabric. I just love the look of it. Here’s a sample of the color on another dress:

I met Stacy at Penn Station this afternoon and we walked to the bridal shop where we are getting the bridesmaids’ dresses (RK Bridal). We both tried on a bunch of dresses that came in the fabric I had picked out. Once Stacy found the best one, she practiced her walk, dancing and her entrance! I thought it was really cool to have someone brave enough to do this in the store, so I could see how the dress moves etc. One of the other customers took it the wrong way and thought Stacy was the bride. She said she was scared for me because she thought Stacy was demonstrating what I had to do at her wedding!

While we were there, I talked to the staff about the fact that the bridesmaids are all from other places and we can’t all come in at once and they had the perfect solution for our situation. I filled out a sheet with each bridesmaid’s information, and which dress she should be fitted for. Then they keep the sheet there and hold it until everyone is measured and then order all the dresses at once. That way we make sure they are all from the same dye lot and the color is identical on each dress.

I’m beginning to find it a little hard to keep a blog about the wedding planning because I don’t want to spoil any surprises for anyone! Well, I guess all I can say is that I decided to get a gift that is personalized for each bridesmaid, just like most of the recommended gifts are! But I tried to get something that everyone will really love, not a silly pink flask or anything like that…

For anyone who doesn’t know, Pete and I painted one wall in our apartment with chalkboard paint and asked everyone to write their best advice or words of encouragement during our engagement party. The wall didn’t turn out quite as we had hoped. After the party I erased all the vulgar drawings and crude comments, which left us with about 75% of the wall blank again. It sat like that for a while, until I saw Pete writing on the wall tonight. He had the great idea that we could come up with our own best advice to ourselves. We had a lot of fun writing all the ideas that came to our heads as well as some of the advice people gave to us verbally. I’d like to take a picture of the wall and post it.. but my camera charger disappeared during the engagement party. I fear it fell into one of the trash bins :(

Yesterday was a very long day, but a lot of fun. All the bridesmaids and our two moms went on our first trip to look at bridesmaids dresses. For a long time it seemed like I picked a color that didn’t exist. So then we started picking out different colors and styles just to try them out. At one store I found some dresses that were not only in the mermaid cut, but also looked like mermaid skin. I picked out one for everyone and I think I really scared them. They thought I was serious, and once Laura had hers on she said, “If you make us wear these, you’re the worst bride ever!” I was glad I asked them to try those dresses on because we all had a good laugh and I think the trip became more fun after that. We also eventually found a dress by Mori Lee that comes in the color I want (a soft medium blue-grey) and the taffeta fabric it comes in looks rich and beautiful. I am also thinking about pale turquoise but I didn’t see much in that color either. The search continues…

I drove out to the Hamptons again today to see the place we chose for the room block. It’s called The Inn at Quogue. I got to see the different types of rooms available so I can give everyone advice on which room would fit them best. I also saw (and really liked) the layout of the whole area. I love that the two main buildings are from the 1600s and 1700s. It is also on the edge of a quaint downtown area which is very cute. They have a restaurant, bar and pool on site and a breakfast/diner next door. They also have free passes for the beach and bikes available for rent. Lastly, there is a nice grassy area with a grill, which I think will be perfect for the evening before the wedding. We can all hang out and have a low key barbecue and then head over to the bar once night falls.

I also stopped by Atlantica again to go over details for the rehearsal. Our plan is to have an afternoon rehearsal and lunch and then relax at the hotel a little before having the barbecue. I really had no idea what to expect in terms of the cost of the rehearsal (especially because of the high price tag of the reception) but I was pleasantly surprised. Since we’re doing a lunch rehearsal we will also get to have a totally different menu from the reception.

My last stop today was to Michael’s to pick up some decorations for the engagement party next weekend and look for supplies for the wedding cake topper. I have an idea for a totally unique topper that I plan to make myself…if I can find everything I need. Wish me luck!

Last night Laura drove up to New York after work so we could go look for a wedding gown today. Not only did we look, but I bought the best wedding gown!! We grabbed some bridal magazines to look through on the train on the way in to the city, and picked out all the different elements that I liked and didn’t like. Then we got in to Kleinfeld and I only found one dress that I thought would fit all the criteria I had chosen. So my sister (wisely) told me to pick out some others just to try the different styles. The main thing that was limiting my choices was that I thought I wanted a pure white dress. I didn’t realize that the dresses that were pure white were the polyester ones (oops!). So I ended up getting a “pearl white” dress in 100% silk. It’s so luxurious and I really love it! I don’t want to reveal too much, because Peter will probably read this later and I want him to be totally surprised when he sees me appear at the end of the aisle.

We booked our photographer today! We got up nice and early (at least for me) and had a long meeting at Starbucks with Danielle Richards. I love her style and was very glad to be able to book her for our date! She was very thorough in going over everything with us and she showed us many different styles of albums, many of which we really liked. She also went over some details I would never have thought of. For example, we will designate someone as the person in charge of rounding up the necessary people for formal photos since the photographers will know our bridal party and parents, but can’t possibly know all of our extended family. As we get closer, we also will come up with a list of important details we want to make sure are captured (for example my heirloom piece from my grandmother) or some of the details I plan to surprise everyone with! The only thing I forgot to ask her is if she has any recommendations for videography. I’m still not 100% sure if I want a video, but we will probably regret it if we don’t, right?

I even went to the library to do some research for the different table names. I plan to make a photo for each table with the name, and then have a small icon of that same photo on each place card. We think it’s going to be very interesting and a nice conversation starter… hopefully. If nothing else, you can all make fun of Mr. & Mrs. Poindexter!

This morning my wake up call was one of my best friends calling to tell me that she tried to book a room in the hotel adjacent to our hall and there are no rooms left for our weekend! I was never comfortable with the fact that the adjacent hotel was owned separately and refused to allow any room blocks, and this is why. I really freaked out when I heard there were no rooms available and started thinking about changing our wedding date. Then I ran to the computer and checked the order for the save the dates. It was already processed and couldn’t be canceled.

What to do? We started looking at accommodations in the surrounding areas and found many options. At first I really liked the idea of everything being all in one place (the hotel, the rehearsal, the salon, ceremony and reception). In the end, I’m actually really happy that this happened! We can still have the rest of it at Atlantica, but I found a hotel that has a B&B feel to it but has 67 rooms so everyone can all stay in one place. It also has a bar and a pool. It’s only 4 miles away. It looks beautiful and it even has a bridal suite. I think everyone is going to be much happier in the end. So I blocked plenty of rooms to be sure we can all stay in one place and have our weekend getaway!

It’s now 2:30 am. I was so excited that we finally settled on a location and date for the wedding that I couldn’t sleep. I stayed up late designing save the date cards and stickers for the calendar. I can’t wait for the morning so I can show Pete and make sure he likes them before I order them.

Save the Dates

We ordered the save the dates tonight! I’m so excited. We also decided to get custom stamps to match. I think it’s going to be really cute. I can’t wait to see them.

Tonight we also went to meet with Father Vincent from St. Luke’s Church in Whitestone. Peter grew up in St. Luke’s (he went to school there and was also an altar boy). We got some information about how the wedding ceremony would work and received a lot of reading material as well. We found out that if I do decide to become baptized the program is 12-16 months but it is okay if it occurs after the wedding. The church will still recognize the wedding as long as we petition the bishop beforehand to do the interfaith ceremony.

Today I drove out to the Hamptons with Pete and both of his parents. Pete really loved Atlantica and the surrounding area. It has a park like feel to it. We even saw a heard of deer running around. I’m so glad that he seems to like it as much as I do!

We also drove to the other place I found in Southampton (Hampton Hall). This was the one that I thought had the “New York Italian Wedding Hall” feeling based on the website. Well… it was awful. It was a building in the middle of a neighborhood, no where near the beach. The town you had to drive through to get there was ugly. The hotels that you could block off were not close and they were really motels, not hotels at all. The thing I keep telling everyone is if we’re going to ask everyone to drive to the Hamptons for the wedding it needs to be on the beach! We could get a hall like that anywhere and probably for less money.

Lastly we stopped by the Swan Club because Pete’s mother was in love with it. Pete thought one of the rooms was okay. I didn’t like it at all. Mr. Milcetic called it a wedding factory and didn’t even get out of the car! If nothing else, going to this place reconfirmed that we want something different.

Today I was finally very motivated to do some web design work and not think about the wedding at all. I got a lot done. I think when I have a deadline it’s easier to make myself do work and put all other thoughts out of my head. After talking to some relatives to get addresses today, Pete said he wanted to try and make a family tree. I searched online for freeware family tree maker, and found an awesome program called MyHeritage Family Tree Builder. We spent about an hour putting in all the relatives we could think of and how they are connected to us. Then we got to learn something really neat. When you mouse over a person it tells you the relationship to the person you started the tree based on. So I now know that one of my family members is a cousin once removed. This is a really neat time to be thinking about a family tree too because this is the time when our two trees are going to merge into one!

I took a break from wedding planning for the majority of the day. I’m starting to feel a little overwhelmed about all the possible details to look into, but still very excited. I did about 10 hours worth of web design work today, which is really important because I have not one, but two projects that I have to have results by Monday! Today Pete was very supportive of me. I’ve been a little anxious about how my family is reacting to the Big New York Wedding. It’s just not done like this in Maryland, but Pete helped me to feel better by reminding me that it’s okay to be excited about what we want and I don’t have to convince other people. We will just continue to tell them we hope they will come and have a great time with no strings attached or expectations. I’m not saying it as well as Pete did, so I will have to ask him to explain it again so his meaning really sinks in. Regardless of the exact thing he said, I was really grateful that he calmed me down.

Okay. Let me introduce myself. My name is Pete and this is my first blog entry. I’m no stranger to writing in a journal but this will be the first time I am sharing my thoughts with public (i.e. posting it online). I am really excited. Today I decided to read my fiancée’s blog entries since she restarted the web site. Yes, I said fiancée. I proposed to Sarah on the 22nd of December and she said yes. It’s very exciting. I’ll get to that later on. For now I want to stick with the website. I guess I always took the blog entries for granted. When I went back and read them I was surprised at how much Sarah wrote and how I felt like I was reliving various times in the past. But most importantly it made feel really in love with her and reminded me of how wonderful she is. I know this is a corny comparison but here goes…it reminds me of that song "Lady in Red". I’d heard that the singer wrote it about his wife after he went to a party and saw this stunning lady in a red dress. When he realized that it was his wife he had an epiphany. It’s kind of how I feel now. I have to admit I have problems with my life sometimes. I feel down at times and it has an adverse effect on my life and relationships. I don’t appreciate what I have sometimes. However, reading Sarah’s entries gave a jolt for some reason. It was like a giant call to attention. Kind of like, "Hey, these things she’s talking about, this is your life too! If you keep wallowing in misery or never really appreciating it (life), it’s going to pass you by" Well, I’m inspired now. I want to be a better person. I want to write blog entries more often. I want Sarah to feel that way too. I want to enjoy life and our life together and live to the fullest.

Tonight we are going to Sunswick (a local watering hole) for a joint birthday party for our friends Jake and Emmet. I’m looking forward to hanging out. Earlier this week Sarah and I met Jake and Tom and their lady friends at Rapture. We had a good time. I like Rapture. It’s a little lounge around the block from me. It feels like my home base here in Astoria. Anyway, I am going to write more about things later on. Right now we are in the middle of preparing for an engagement party and a wedding. See you later!

Today I put a hold on Atlantica for Sunday, September 21st! I’m really exited and Pete said he agrees that September will probably be better than August. I checked the average weather for the date (70 degrees) and there has been no rain on that date for the last couple of years, so I’m really starting to feel like this could be the end of the mad hunt for the perfect location.

Pete’s mom is still not 100% convinced about the Atlantica. She says we should use the rest of the one week time that we have the date “on hold” to double check that there is no where better. I found another wedding site in the Hamptons that has that seems to have that New York Italian Wedding Hall look (at least on the website) and it is 3 miles from the beach. When we were dress shopping, the woman who helped us recommended that I get a reception site near the beach and just drive there for pictures instead of having the reception be actually at the beach. I’m still not sold on the idea, I really like the feeling of the ballroom that overlooks the ocean. We are going to drive out to the Hamptons again on Sunday. Maybe seeing it in person will be different, but I have a feeling nothing will be better than having the ocean view from the ballroom. Plus Atlantica has the cutest rehearsal dinner area and the salon, hotel, heated pool etc. For me, it seems perfect.
<!--

Even later: Wedding Invitations!

I found the most perfect wedding invitation! I don’t want to tell everyone because I think it will be a great surprise to get in the mail, so I guess you will all have to wait and see. They are so unique and a keepsake in and of themselves.

Today we spoke to a Catholic priest from the neighborhood. He told us that if both the bride and groom are Catholic, you must be married in the church. If it is an interfaith marriage, then the priest can come perform the service at another location, however, it must be indoors unless the Bishop gives special permission. So if we do decide to do a beach ceremony instead of a church ceremony, we will have to find out if it is possible to move the ceremony inside to the ballroom or else we will have to try and get special permission to have the ceremony under the tent on the deck like they typically do. Hmm…

Today I went with Pete’s mom and looked at Atlantica in Westhampton Beach and Oheka Castle in Huntington. I really loved Atlantica. When you enter the lobby, you are on the ground floor. There is an adorable space for the rehearsal. Then you go up a staircase and as you walk up the backside of the ballroom is revealed, with panoramic views of the ocean, right from the ballroom. It also has tolerable carpet under the tables (as opposed to some hideous carpeting I saw at other places). It has a wood dance floor, huge soaring ceilings and white walls and columns. I love the space…it’s so me. It’s beautiful but not gaudy. There is also a huge bridal suite, an attached hotel, a heated pool and private beach.

After that we went to the Oheka Castle. It was breathtaking and had a very interesting history. I told Pete’s mom that if anything would make me change my mind about the beach, this could be it. We didn’t have an appointment so there was no one available who could talk about dates or pricing. I’m sure it’s too expensive anyway.

Lastly, we went to look for a dress for me for the engagement party. I found the perfect dress at a great bargain. Then (just for fun) I tried on my first wedding dress ever! I really loved it on in the store, but we took pictures and when I got home I didn’t like it in the pictures. I noticed while I was there that the store had “skinny” mirrors, and I could really see the difference when I got home. I looked so wide in the photos!

Yesterday I made a lot of appointments for today; our first day of looking for locations for the wedding reception! We drove 300 miles from Long Island to the New Jersey Shore, trying to find the perfect place for a beach wedding. Most of the places we saw on Long Island are not exactly beach. They are on the Long Island Sound, or on the south shore, which is sheltered by barrier reef islands. Neither of these locations have the crashing waves that I am longing for. New Jersey has the crashing waves I want, but it doesn’t have that magical feeling of New York. Overall, the places we saw were okay, but each of them has something major that didn’t work for us. Here’s a list of all the places we went to today: Carltun on the Sound (Bayville, NY), The Snapper Inn (Oakdale, NY), The Riverview (Oakdale, NY), The White Sands (Point Pleasant, NJ), McLoon’s (Point Pleasant, NJ) and Ocean Place Resort (Long Branch, NJ). What a day!

This week I did tons of research on wedding halls. I was surprised to realize that there aren’t really any locations on Long Island that are on the beach. My favorite place so far is called The Pavilion at Sunken Meadow (State Park). It’s on the sound, but it has sand and the space looks pretty but not too pretentious. When I spoke to the catering manager, he said the date 8/8/08 is available and he would even drop the price per person a little since it’s a Friday. I was really excited to take Pete to see the place on Saturday. The key word is “was” because today I learned that many many people get engaged for Christmas and everyone is out looking to book their reception right now. The catering manager called me today and said (paraphrasing), “I’m just calling to let you know someone else just booked your date. What other dates are you interested in?” I was so shocked that he would do that. I hung up and was so upset I started crying when I told Pete what happened. I didn’t even realize I cared that much but I couldn’t believe how nonchalant the guy was about giving the date away after we talked about it already. I have no more interest in that place after the way he acted and from now on I will ask each person I speak to about their policy with holding a date.

We talked in the car about the fact that the whole idea of being engaged to be married was starting to sink in. We both liked the idea of holding the wedding on 8/8/08 and decided it would be okay to tell our friends that’s what we wanted.

New Year’s Eve

We went to a party and saw many more of our friends for the first time since we got engaged. We talked lots of wedding talk since most of the people at the party were married, and many of them married very recently. Everyone said if we want to get married in August, we have to start now now now to get everything ready in time.

We went to a birthday celebration where a few of our friends were gathered, and excitedly told them we were just engaged! It was the best way to start off my 26th birthday.

Afternoon

We had a leisurely morning of getting ready, and started driving for my parents’ house around 1:30 pm. On the way we called Pete’s family to tell them the news first, since we wouldn’t be able to tell them in person. We decided to wait until we got home to tell my family in person. On the drive down, we started calling all of our friends on speaker phone so we could tell them together. When we got to my parents’ house, everyone came to the door to welcome us in and we told them all the great news!

Evening

I decided to have a more casual night for my birthday dinner, so we could have my friends from Maryland stop by. We ordered pizzas and sat in the living room talking. We also called my uncle’s house to tell his family and my grandparents, who were staying with them about our news. Everyone was very excited and asking us lots of questions, and we were starting to feel a little overwhelmed. When’s the date? Who’s in the bridal party? Where will you get married? Etc.

Tonight, Pete and I went to Rockefeller Center to view the 84 foot tall Christmas tree, which is lit up with energy saving LED lights this year, saving over 2,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per day! We wanted to go and see the tree for some time. Pete wasn’t feeling well on Saturday evening and it kept getting later and later. I looked up the information and found out that the lights on the tree stay on until 11:30 pm. I told Pete we didn’t have to go if he wasn’t feeling up to it, but he really wanted to go before we left for Maryland to see my family for my birthday and Christmas. So we made some hot chocolate, and jumped in the car at 11:00 pm. We got to a parking spot a couple of blocks away at 11:20 pm and rushed over to see the tree. We asked some girls to take our picture under the tree and then Pete said he wanted to show me a special spot, with a nice view. The view was the Christmas tree & angels behind us, the Lord & Taylor snow flake light show in front of us, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral next to that. Next I found out why Pete wasn’t feeling so well. He was extremely nervous; his chin was shaking as he said to me, “Baby, I have a question to ask you.” Then he pulled his hand out of his pocket and I saw a black velvety ring box and I can’t remember what he said next! I do remember that all I could say was “of course I will marry you!” On the walk back to the car, we both kept stopping to look at my ring, since it is so beautiful.
